With those to whom we are closest, we commonly direct unrealistic hopes and expectations. We tend to hold onto the past, often viewing people in the same light as we have seen them for years or even decades. We bring to new relationships the shadows of previous encounters, imposing transference and other similar phenomena. As we look at the conditioned quality of such relationships, we become more aware of these layers, of their roots in the past and in present associations, and we start to unpick the more insidious aspects of this process.

However, the protective and introspective functions of sati which are of such importance within the Buddhist understanding of sati are not so readily apparent within the MBSR and MBCT protocol. In addition, whilst there is an acknowledgement of the importance of mett¯a as ‘kindness’ and ‘friendliness’ throughout the eight-week program, there has yet been no introduction of a more formalized practice of mett¯a, with the mett¯a in the eight-week course remaining at a more ‘implicit’ level. That mett¯a has so far been excluded from the protocol at an ‘explicit’ level has been for sound clinical reasons.

At the same time, concern has been raised within some sections of the Buddhist community that the use of mindfulness practices in this way represents a shift away from the spiritual underpinnings of the teachings on which this approach is based.
